Users Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that people who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals buying such drugs must be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Scientists note that people who lose weight through dieting usually see a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Doctors suggest the way of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger activating and you become starving," said one woman.

This difficulty is worsened if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle support.
